1st July 2009
When performing a pirouette in ballet, allow the head to move freely, keep the arms in the port de bras position and keep the legs on the balls of the feet. Avoid doing a flat-footed pirouette turn with help from an experienced dance instructor in this free video ballet lesson.

horrible. the arms …
horrible. the arms can be used but the hips also play a role, esp. if you do a piroette with the hands on the hips….be4 anything, you have to have the basic placement of the body. There’s a new book “Advanced Principles in Teaching Classical Ballet” by John White & a chapter “What is Wrong With Ballet in America?” It sheds some light on the fact that our mostly haphazard training here in America could use a serious makeover…be4 anything else you need a strong base. (starts w/body placement)

usually the foot is …
usually the foot is in the front but sometimes the professor (like in some Russian classes) will request that the foot is in retire back (it is called a retire and not a passe because passe is not a position-it refers to passing through as oppose to retire which is what the actual position is called)

Traditionally the only turn you will do with your passe in the back is pique turns. Pirouettes should always be connected in the front.

Does your ballet instructor tell you to keep your foot at the back of the knee in retire for a pirouette? Because, usually turns (except pose turns) will usually have your retire in the front of the knee.

She needs to completely square off to the front before finishing the turn. I also noticed in her prep, that her weight seems to be in her heels.
She definitely an ok dancer. I wonder if she can do doubles or triples?

mymarioforever… …
mymarioforever… if you don’t mind me saying, it depends what you count as a ‘real’ ballet dancer.. & if you mean a professional.. i dought very much they’d be on you tube showing steps on how to pirouette… plus in my opinion aquiring the technique of dancing on pointe doesn’t necessarily make you a great ballet dancer… You tube is a free for all to display their talents..
